What We Believe
1. Loving God
We acknowledge God as Lord of all and His desire is that we enjoy life-long intimacy with Him. We recognise that we become like the one we worship. Out of a loving relationship with Him, where we experience freedom and joy, comes a passion to be like Christ and give our all to Him. It is in an environment of worship that we learn things that go beyond what our intellect can grasp and it is in this place that we are transformed into His image, with ever increasing glory. Being Christ-centred means that we place Christ first in our affections and first in authority in our lives.
2 Cor. 3:18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Acts 2:36 Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.
God’s relationship with people is based on grace and love. His grace to us is His unconditional love, unmerited favour and transforming power. It is what enables us to enter into relationship with Him, to continue in relationship with Him and to be successful Christians. As God’s grace has been freely given to us, we freely extend this grace toward others. We believe that each person is uniquely and wonderfully made by God for His pleasure and therefore, we endeavour to create an environment where every believer is empowered to know God for him/herself and is empowered to build God’s Kingdom here on earth through his/her unique personality, gifts, skills and calling.
Ephesians 2:8–10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
1.3 HONOUR GOD
The foundational motive of all we do, the ultimate goal of our outreach, the invisible force driving our vision is to honour God. Our bottom line is to do all we do for the honour and glory of God, not for our personal, ministry or work success.
1 Tim 1:17 Now to the King eternal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen.
2. Loving people
People are God’s treasure. We see the love God has for people and, therefore, we endeavour to love people as God loves them.
2 Corinthians 5:14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died.
2.1 EVANGELISM AND DISCIPLESHIP
We value evangelism because we desire to embody, demonstrate and explain the Good News of the great love of God for all people and his desire for relationship with all. This loving relationship is accessible to all because of the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross.
We value discipleship as our mandate to personally:
- Follow Jesus with loving obedience
- Fellowship with other believers
- Fish for lost people
- Further the kingdom of God and then to help others do the same so that they can help others do the same.
John 3:16–17 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.
2 Timothy 2:2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.
2.2 RELATIONSHIPS: FAMILY, MARRIAGE AND FRIENDSHIPS
As the Lord places a high value on relationship, so we value pursuing healthy relationships in our marriages, family and friendships. We prioritise relationships in any context, helping people to take responsibility for their attitudes and behaviour and facilitating healing, forgiveness and release from past wounds. We value healthy families, multi-cultural relationships and life-giving friendships as a glimpse of heaven on earth.
We believe that honour is a foundation of relationship in God’s Kingdom and as such value it in all our interactions with people. Honour says that I live to show God’s value on people regardless of their situation in life. Honour includes godly confrontation that protects and preserves relationships. A culture of honour creates an environment that sustains breakthrough and enables victories of one generation to be handed to the next.
John 13:35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
Col. 3:12-14 …as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love…
1 Peter 2:17 Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honour the king.
2.3 SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
We seek to have God’s heart for the poor, the widow and the orphan. We strive to fully represent the heart of God to those in need in our church and in our community. Works of compassion are the very best outward display of our devotion to God. We set our plans to always have something for the poor, the widow and the orphan.
James 1:27 This is pure and undefiled religion, to care for the widow and the orphan in their time of distress.
Deuteronomy 24:19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands.
2.4 WE VALUE SERVING, GENEROSITY AND GIVING
Our heart is to be like Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve and give of Himself completely. Serving isn’t a stepping-stone to greatness but it is greatness. As God is generous, we purpose to be generous to others with our time and finances.
Philippians 2:5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.
Luke 12:34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
3. The Church
We value an influential church as a vehicle through which we love God and people.
3.1 APOSTOLIC CENTRE
We see His People Johannesburg coming into its destiny as an apostolic sending church where all the five-fold ministries find appropriate expression. We believe an apostolic church is one that pioneers new ground for the Gospel, preserves and passes on a God-given vision through the multi-generational transmission of healthy theology and creates environments where other ministries can emerge.
Ephesians 4:11-12 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ…
3.2 NATION BUILDING
We value a culture where every member is seen as a minister called to build and transform the nation according to the pattern of heaven. We are the salt and light of the earth; we are to penetrate society with God’s extra-ordinary power and amazing wisdom to display His splendor here on earth. The church is a voice and a model of transformation to the city and the nation. The church is to articulate clearly and regularly that every lay person is a minister and ministry is finding needs in society and meeting them with the goal of spreading the Kingship of Christ. We believe that the Bible provides a blueprint from which the church can lead in providing solutions to socio-economic and political issues.
Jeremiah 33:7–9 I will bring Judah and Israel back from captivity and will rebuild them as they were before. I will cleanse them from all the sin they have committed against me and will forgive all their sins of rebellion against me.Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.
1 Corinthians 2:16b But we have the mind of Christ.
3.3 EVERY MEMBER A FRUITFUL MINISTER
The Church is not a social club but a community of ‘called out ones’ who are commissioned to carry Christ’s mission into all the world. ‘It is the ordinary who are called to ministry, not the extraordinary – all of God’s people are called as ministers.’
We believe that every member of the church is significant in God’s plan to transform lives and communities, and therefore, we value every member being fruitful in ministry. Being passionate for God should not replace being fruitful for God, but one should lead to the other.
John 15:7–8 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
3.4 EXCELLENCE AND CREATIVITY
God is excellent and we are to imitate His excellence, as we are to imitate every aspect of His character. The Master’s words, “Well done good and faithful servant,” speak of a spirit of excellence. Also, God first reveals himself as a creator and, therefore, we as his children are to follow in the trade of our Father. We believe that we, as the church, are called not only to be on par with current trends, but to shape and create them by being the explorers, inventors and innovators of the day. We value an excellent, creative church, a people that have the mind of Christ and exhibit the imagination of heaven.
Psalm 8:9 Oh Lord how excellent is your name.
Matthew 25:21 His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’
